Yesterday I was catching up with a friend and she shared how recently God had spoken two words to her.... they were "practice peace."
This struck me and I asked myself how do I practice peace? Here are some things I think God means when He asks us to practice peace.
- Be intentionally aware of the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Ask yourself, am I kind? Patient? Loving? Gentle? Faithful? Do I treat others like Jesus wants me to?
- Look at your life. Are there things on your plate you are doing out of habit, guilt, or obligation instead of calling? They may be amazingly good things....volunteer work, Bible studies, PTA, getting a degree. But is God asking you to do these things? If not, the busyness they bring to your life hinders you from practicing peace.
- Do what you know to do. So many times we struggle with our life situations and relationships, constantly trying to figure out a solution. This could go on for years. The solution, a lot of the time, is simply to do what we know to do. In order for change to occur in our life....we have to choose to act in a healthy way when our flesh wants and our habit is to act in a dysfunctional way. Every time we respond with our spirit man, in the moment life is happening, we take another step forward to becoming who God calls us to be. This brings peace to our life.
- Let go of control. Friend....the truth is this.....the ONLY thing you have any control over is your response to life. You cannot control what others think, words they say, or the way in which they act. I heard a speaker talk about how we each have our own "ranch" and so many of us live, not only in our ranch, but in other's ranches as well. Stay in your own ranch. By doing this...you will practice peace.
Lord, please help us to practice peace. For our sake and for those around us. We want our life to impact the world, from the folks we live with day in and day out, to the people you bring across our path. As we practice peace, we trust You will begin to use our life to draw others to Your wonderful plan of salvation. For this is your perfect will and plan for each of us. In Jesus name we pray....Amen.
