Romans 12:10 states, "love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other." (NLT)This kind of love takes an intentional mindset, one of placing others above ourselves. I am certain that just about everyone who participated that day had family responsibilities, jobs, other commitments but they chose to show "genuine affection" and "honor" towards mother. They made an intentional decision to put the other responsibilities aside for awhile and be apart of something bigger....to show God's love to another.
This kind of "community" also takes action. You see, if we aren't intentional about putting others before ourselves then all the other "needs" of the day will overshadow the opportunity to serve. This event would not have come together unless many hands worked to get it done. My sister spent time organizing, cooking and inviting. The other participants prepared notes, cards, posters, songs, and spent time scheduling around the event.
Last, I believe this type of thinking and serving brings true joy. I bet if we polled all those involved in the birthday celebration, each one would say they had as much fun as mother did! Did you catch the word used in Romans? Delight. This means to "take great pleasure or joy." That's what we get from becoming a part of a community who loves God by loving others.....JOY. Although it may take planning and action and at times feel as though we don't have time......it's good for the soul to serve alongside others and to show God's love to those around us...to be a part of a community.
So, where is your community today? Who can you love on or serve with a joyful heart. This type of love doesn't always need planning; He's got an opportunity for you today.....be looking for your chance!
