In 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (MSG) we are challenged to spend time molding and cultivating the little hearts of our children so they live a life running after God. It states "With each of you we were like a father with his child, holding your hand, whispering encouragement, showing you step-by-step how to live well before God, who called us into his own kingdom, into this delightful life."
As parents, it is a daunting task to think of truly "developing" our child's character. But if we don't - who will? God has given us these little ones for a short time to...."hold their hand, whisper encouragement, and show them step-by-step" how to live for Jesus and how to love others. You see, John isn't waiting for Cole and Grace to get to the "sibling rivalry" stage to instruct about how we are to treat each other. He is beginning at 18 months; speaking words that build a Godly character for years to come.
Have you stopped to think about the character traits you want your children to leave home with? What kind of wife/husband/parent do you want your child to be? I encourage you to take some time this week and really pray about the "Condition of your child's Heart" as Elizabeth wrote about. Ask the Lord to show you where you can begin to whisper words of life, words of encouragement, and words that challenge a Character that lives for God. He will show you areas where you can speak this into your child.
What character trait will you be working on this week?
