At this point in typical new year's resolutions most people have decided it's too much work and not worth the effort. But when we are talking about eternal things...it's always worth it...whatever the "it" is.
For some of us, "it" is to give up something or stop something such as eating, drinking, smoking, gossiping, complaining, nagging, judging. For some, we are to add something; exercising, eating clean, kind words, more affection, prayer time, or Bible study.
Ultimately everything I mentioned has eternal implications. Anything that distracts us or easily entangles us into sin has eternal effects. These things in our life distract us from the call God has placed on our life. The call to make an eternal impact in this world, to reflect His nature, that our lives will be an invitation to come and check this Jesus out.
Whatever your "it" is, I want to encourage you in this 3rd week of the "new" you...don't quit! Keep focused, do the daily (sometimes by minute) decisions that keep you moving forward in the call. Real change can't happen on our own, our flesh will get in the way and trip us up every time. Paul reminds us in Romans 7:18, "For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out."
God knew this would be our nature and He has provided words of encouragement when the road seems long.
Psalm 73:26 "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever"
Some days in the midst of hard decisions and attempting to put my flesh where it belongs, I have to repeat Psalm 73 to myself over and over again. This is a reminder that it isn't me getting this accomplished but it is Christ living in me that will be my portion and strength. I really can't make lasting, eternal changes on my own.
Proverbs 16:9 "We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it."
You see, God knew real, lasting, eternity impacting change would be difficult. We would have trouble disciplining our flesh but these scriptures assure us that He is with us all the way and He is cheering us on to finish strong.
Hebrews 12:1 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."
So today He is saying to us, "Don't Quit!" don't lose heart...keep up the work that will transform, change, and make a difference for eternity!
We would love to hear your goals and pray for you in your journey. Leave us a note telling of your accomplishments, tips that have worked for you and/or scriptures that have carried you through...it may be just the thing someone else needs to hear!
