One of her challenges, on this first day of study, was to memorize the entire book of James. Now a year ago my reaction would have been "Uh...yeah right Beth...I don't think so!" But last November I felt the Lord calling me to begin to make an intentional effort in committing the Word to memory. I began on November 7th to memorize one verse per week. I can honestly say it has been life changing for me.
So when Beth began to talk about memorizing the entire book today, instead of feeling overwhelmed and discouraged and doubtful....I felt a wonderful challenge from the Lord. She offered a 10 minute video of encouragement and shared the system, through an acrostic for ABIDE, she uses when she commits a large portion of Scripture to memory.
I thought I would pass along to you what she talked about. Perhaps you have been hearing the still small voice of the Lord calling you to commit the Word to memory and are struggling with moving forward. I think this acrostic will help take some of the fear out of starting. So, here it is.
A.....ASK God for the ability!
You need His help...no one can do it on their own strength. This is one request He will answer for certain!
B.....BELIEVE you can do it!
The Word promises us we can do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthens us. Speak life over yourself and profess that you CAN DO THIS!
I......INCREASE the portion each week.
Beth makes a copy of one chapter at a time and laminates it. She then gives herself one month to commit it to memory. She works on 2 to 4 verses each week and is always repeating what she worked on the week before.
D.....DETERMINE a set time each day to practice.
She suggested it be the same time each day because it gets us in a habit and we will not forget. Working everyday helps the mind retain what it is learning.
You are internalizing the life giving, inspired Word of the Living God! Don't dread it...look forward to it!
So there you go! I will keep you posted on my progress. I am hoping by February I will have the entire book of James hidden in my heart. I won't be able to do it without the anointing and help from my Heavenly Father...but I know it is His heart's will that I live and breathe His Word. How about you? What is He asking of you concerning this very important habit of a Christ follower? Don't be afraid of failing! Step out of that boat and go for it...and let Tracie and I in on your journey! We would love to walk along side of you and cheer you on!
