There are days when my flesh overwhelms me. I find myself thinking, acting and speaking in ways I don't want to think, act and speak. The battle inside of me is as real as the ground is firm beneath my feet. The battle is between my flesh and my spirit. My flesh thinks it is totally in control on some days, and sometimes it feels that way.
But I am reminded as I read Romans 8 that my flesh, my sin nature, is not the prominent power in my life. His Spirit is. It's living and breathing inside of me. And this, brings me hope.
Romans 8:10 (NIV) says "But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you."
Can anyone say AMEN! with me?? Holy toledo...when I think about what this verse is saying, my mind can hardly wrap itself around the truth of it.
The SAME SPIRIT that raised Jesus from the dead, LIVES INSIDE OF ME.
Now that is a powerful force.
Think about it...Jesus is dead. Wrapped in burial clothes, lying in a tomb. He is dead. Not breathing for 3 days. His physical body is so ravaged by how He died, his burial clothes are beginning to give off the stench of His torturous death.
Then...Power enters the tomb. This Power breathes life into Jesus' body and He awakens from the dead. His eyes open. He is alive. Completely alive.
The Power that woke up Jesus...lives inside us. Sit with that.
Do I live as though this Power lives inside me? Do I act as though this Power lives inside me? Do I speak as though this Power lives inside me? Am I moved to love as though this Power lives inside me? Do I love my husband/wife as though this Power lives inside me? Do I parent my kids as though this Power lives inside of me? Do I treat that difficult person at work as though this Power lives inside me? Do I eat as though this Power lives inside me? Do I trust as though this Power lives inside me? Do I pray as though this Power lives inside me?
As Christ followers, as Christ lovers, we are not bound and consumed by our flesh. We are free, because of what Christ did for us on the cross. We are not a slave to sin. We can be over comers. We can live in victory. All because the same Power that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of us.
We simply have to remind ourself, every time we are tempted to give in to our flesh, Whose we are and Whose power we have to lean upon. We have a choice in that moment of decision...to lean into the Power or ignore Its presence.
Father forgive us for not recognizing Your Power living and breathing inside of us. Forgive us for giving our flesh any attention at all. Come and help us be more alive today to Your Spirit and Power living within our very being. Please help us to lean into you and not let sin rule us today. May our life bless you and accomplish Your will on this earth. Amen.
