"But how do you know?" and "Where can I find that?" were the questions I heard. A woman seeking truth and asking for wise counsel to understand her faith more clearly. Our conversation went on for quite some time as we massaged each inquiry and worked our way through what we believe.
With each question, I quickly knew how I wanted to answer, I knew the story or concept of the scriptures to explain that particular area of our faith. The issue was that I rarely had the hard address of the scripture. As I sat there taking question after question I heard the Holy Spirit whisper, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." 1 Peter 3:15 (Yes, I had to look up this address!)
Now, I truly feel as though I can speak accurately and confidently to questions regarding my faith. However, I have always used the excuse, "well, I just don't memorize the address easily, that's not how my mind works but I know the content." The underlying feeling I have had this week is that my intentions are not enough. That is a cop out, lazy, taking the easy way out and, most of all, disobedient.
The truth is the Word is clear on how I should revere, study, and understand the Word of God.
- Follow Jesus' model....He often quoted scriptures.
- "hide it in my heart" Psalm 119:11
- "Keep this Book of the Law always on my lips; meditate on it day and night, so that I may be careful to do everything written in it. Then I will be prosperous and successful." Joshua 1:8
- "Be ready to encourage other believers with the truth." 1 Thessalonians 4:18
You see, I can better represent Jesus and His story when I know the Word specifically. Then my speech becomes more than my own opinion...it has authority behind it.
So, this week I am on a new mission for myself. To put God's Word in my heart...with the words and address specifically like it is stated in the Book! If this isn't something you have taken on in your walk with Jesus...would you like to join me? I would love to have a companion along for the ride!
