The foundation of this trait is to think about others, to place the needs of others above yourself, to respect others. I want my children and grandchildren to live a life reflecting the heart of Jesus, who was all about people and putting their needs first. To reflect His heart of serving.
This mindset doesn't just happen; it is learned and molded by watching and having opportunity to put it into action. In our homes we have to model, speak of, and encourage the lifestyle we desire for our children. Ultimately, our goal is for these words and actions to become a part of who we are as a family and eventually....who they are as adults leaving our home.
This past weekend my family had the privilege of participating in a Weekend of Service with our church. Our church shut the doors - not one church service happened within the walls of our buildings. Church happened all over North San Diego County. Over 10,000 of us served our community and demonstrated the love of Jesus in a tangible way.
As I went from project to project I noticed so many young children. Families serving together. From 2 years old to 17 and all those in between! It was so exciting to think of parents modeling and giving life experiences to their children that will mold this idea that we are to love outside of the church walls.
It is simple really. It doesn't need to be some large organized event...as a matter of fact, it shouldn't be very often. To instill this trait into our children it should be a family discussion, prayer and then action. And you won't have to go far. Walk out onto you driveway and ask the Lord to show you who needs a little love on your street. I guarantee you there is someone very close by that could use a hug, some cookies, some yard work, some words of encouragement. Then act as a family unit!
So where will you start? Tell your family today that you are asking God to show you where to serve in your neighborhood or community. Once you have a place to start, talk as a family about Jesus' example and how you are living that out and then enjoy the experience! It is amazing how blessed you will feel after serving others!
