This has been an interesting year for my family. In the last 16 months I have had both parents diagnosed with cancer, we have lost a dear friend to cancer, we now have another friend in hospice, and I know you could add to the list with family and friends. These families would never say "I wish the house was cleaner, I had ran around more and accomplished more at work or things were perfect at our home," no, they would all agree that more time with family and friends would be on their list!
It really is the people that make up our fondest memories and add value to our lives. It's not how big the party was, if the house was cleaned or the meal was perfect....it's the people. Taking the time to fully "BE" with people and truly enjoy the moment is what it should be about.
Maybe get in the car with hot cider, turn up the Christmas music and go look at lights, actually play with the kids and watch how easily they have fun, burn some candles and just hang out together. I want to encourage you to slow down this season and do these things more than hustle and bustle to make everything picture perfect. Instead of big parties and events, make time for close friends and engage in meaningful memory making. Declare in advance that this year will be about Jesus and loving people....set your mind and your calendar to hold you to the declaration.
So, in our family, we are making some adjustments to our view of the holidays this year. It's not about looking like the pictures on Pinterest, going to more parties or having more under the tree. It's about "The Little Things" or in actuality, the biggest things of all.....each other. Our focus is on our Savior and those around us. I hope you will make adjustments too and find peace and love in your home as we begin the holiday season.
