You see, our culture has slowly twisted and degraded the word love, the definition of love, and the demonstration of love that we are now in this "cultural" debate about love.
So, we go back to our compass, the Word, to see how God defines Love. God defines love as this:
it does not envy
it does not boast
it is not proud
it does not dishonor others
it is not self-seeking
it is not easily angered
it keeps no record of wrongs
it does not delight in evil
rejoices in the truth
love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
So, in this week of Love, how are you operating in this definition? When you look back over the past few weeks, is this how your actions towards your spouse would be defined? Ask yourself, "What is it like to be loved by me?" Would these characteristics be listed by my spouse?
We can read this verse and think, "Yes, I am going to do this!" but good intentions only go as far as the thought...they are fleeting. It takes intentional, others-centered, prayer covered focus in order to act this way. This is not our nature...we need Him in the center of our relationships in order to love like this daily. Only He can walk us through laying ourselves aside and loving this person to this degree.
My challenge to us all this week....let's be 1 Corinthian lovers! My prayer is that in the coming days and months our spouses will feel this kind of love from us. I pray we will value and honor them they way God intended Love to be given. I pray that you and I will be a walking, talking example of what love is....
Live Well (and Happy Valentines Week!),
