So what will our response be when we face uncertainty? I don't want to be blown away by my circumstances; wringing my hands and worrying through my day. It is in these times that I want others to be drawn to the Father. I want those who don't know Him to ponder, "What is it that keeps her steady?" "Where does she get her Hope?" I want them to see Jesus in EVERY circumstance in my life but this doesn't just happen. This type of living requires an intentional mindset.
Here are a few ways that I have build a shield around myself and our family for times like these:
- Stay in communication with Him! Prayer is such a privilege where we can share our heart, our fears, our desires, our hurts, our joys, our thanksgiving with our Creator. It is just talking to your Dad....simply talking AND listening to Him. It is in these times that He can reassure us of His presence, His love, and His mercy.
- Stay in the Word! This is His love letter to us.....read it often, meditate on it, sing about it, and write it out. I love to put my name in the scripture - it makes it so personal. Get the Word in your heart and mind....and speak it over your circumstances!
- Stay in Community! I really am not sure what I would do without my growth group from church. They are Jesus' hand and feet when I need Him in a tangible way. They have carried my mat, they have washed my feet, and they have celebrated with me. I have made a choice to surround myself (at work, in my neighborhood, and in personal things) with believers so that I am constantly surrounded by those who will lift me up, sharpen me, and keep me moving towards Him.
This one is so very important to learn, live and to teach our children. The community we choose is vital to our mindset. We ARE the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. If we are surrounded by people full of faith, speaking life and the Word into us, building us up and holding us accountable; our life will be more joyful and effective for the Kingdom! Don't miss this one...it is necessary to living victoriously through uncertain times.
- Set your mind on His things! The Word tells us to take captive every thought; so do that. I find so often we frame situations and our circumstances in such a negative mindset. This is such a subtle way the enemy can get us.....don't let him have a foothold on your thinking. The minute a negative thought enters your mind.....take it captive and turn it into something positive or begin quoting scriptures. The Word is active and alive and sharper than a two-edged sword....use it!
I have found that these decisions in my everyday life set a guard around my heart and mind and family so when the storm comes we are standing firm in Jesus. Regardless of our circumstances, He continues to be our center, our foundation and our lives can still be an invitation to come and see what He is all about.
What do you use as a shield to protect your heart and home? I would love for you to share with us so we can all grow from this community of Living Well.
