The good character was at a breaking point, on his knees about ready to give in and the evil character whispers, "go ahead choose evil, it's easier." This ultimately fires up the good character and gives him the courage to overcome.
Isn't that how the enemy operates? Just little subtle lines he whispers continually to try to get us to give in, give up, and choose to disobey? This makes me so irritated with him and with how, at times, I so easily give those thoughts room to grow.
Obedience takes effort, it takes taming our flesh, it takes prayer, and it takes intention. It doesn't matter what we are battling...gossip, thoughts, eating, exercising, drinking, emotional affairs, anything in excess, as well as speaking truth and walking according to God's Word; it all takes discipline and yes, sometimes, it is the harder road.
God calls us to obedience for our own good; He only wants the best for us. He knows our nature, He knows we need boundaries to keep our hearts and minds safe and secure in Him.
We are living in a culture/time where we want everything to be easy. We want is quicker, cheaper, flashier, and without effort. We have come to a mindset that it's all about our pleasure, comfort, and enjoyment.
The truth is, our lives are to be "All about Him," and sometimes that call makes for hard decisions about how to operate in this world. I love these verses and how they encourage us to make the hard decisions as a worship to Him.
"With promises like this to pull us on, dear friends, let's make a clean break from anything that defiles or distracts us, from within and without. Let's make our entire lives fit and holy temples for the worship of God." 2 Corinthians 7:1 (MSG).
"For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey Him and the power to do what pleases Him. In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing, so that no one can speak a word of blame against you. You are to live clean, innocent lives as children of God in a dark world of crooked and perverse people. Let your lives shine brightly before them." Philippians 2:13-15
I want to live a life of obedience; I know you do too. I don't want to take the easy road, or give into the subtle lies from the enemy. I want to say "yes," to the small, everyday choices of obedience. I want my whole life to be pleasing to Him and one that invites others to check Him out because in the end, that is really what this life is all about!
