With the onset of the new year always comes reflection and goal setting. I am not one for "making a resolution" most of the time but this year I have been very reflective of the past 12 months. I also have a sense of great expectation for the coming year.
With that I have spent a significant amount of time thinking about goals, resolutions if you will, and contemplating how to stay the course in the coming months. What I know is that there is a fallacy in making my own resolutions because this sets me up for failure every time. You see, the truth is, I can't make lasting change on my own - my flesh wins when I try to do these things on my own.
It is only with Christ that I can make lasting change. This is not just about praying about something I want to do/change....it is about aligning my goals to His goals for my life. It is about seeking Him and letting Him guide every decision I made, every turn I take, every word I say.
It is in Him, and through Him that we live and move and breathe......shouldn't our goals align with Him then?
Here are a few things to think on as you look toward 2014:
- Spend time seeking Him, ask Him where you need to make some big/small changes
- Write down a few goals - you are 70% more likely to achieve a goal that has been written down
- Take small steps....ask for daily guidance from Him
- Share your goals with someone to support you, pray for you, and hold you accountable
- Meditate on the Word and find scriptures that will give you strength during times of struggle in the change
Here are a few scriptures to help you in the process:
"We plan the way we want to live; but only God makes us able to live it." Proverbs 16:9 (MSG)
"For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose." Philippians 2:13
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." James 1:5
In the coming weeks I will share some of my goals and how the slow process of change is going. I hope you will share with us too. We would be honored to pray with you about His goals for you in the 2014!
