Jesus said in Matthew 11, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me. For I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls." I love how He tells us to learn from Him. "Watch the way I do it and then do it that way." Learn gentleness and humility and what will you get? Rest. Rest for your soul.
In what relationship do you struggle in giving gentle responses? Where in your life does gentleness hide and harshness expose itself? Are you searching for rest in your life? Could it be that you are not at "rest" because gentleness and humility have not been learned from watching Jesus and practiced in your life?
The world is harsh. Its words are harsh, its actions are harsh, its motives are harsh.
As Christ followers, it's time to take Proverbs 15:1 seriously to heart. To begin to be light in our conversations, what we post and share on face book, how we respond to people who are unreasonable. It's not easy. Oh no, it's not always our first choice. But how else are we going to stand out as different? As peaceful? As gentle? As humble?
We can begin at home. Our kiddos are watching our responses...are they gentle or harsh? Ouch. Do we want our household to be at "rest"? Of course we do! It's all in the practice of being gentle and humble in heart.
How about our workplace? Want rest there? Be gentle and humble in your responses to people, allowing your answers to be an invitation for experiencing the presence of God. Cool.
It's possible. Because of Jesus. Let's learn from Him. Our most favorite Teacher of all!
