That day left a wife and 18 month old son to continue, a Father and Mother to continue, a sister and, best-friend, brother-in-law to continue. And with deep sorrow they have lived. This loss in their life has fueled their love of country and those who serve. I remember my Grandparents loving on other young military families and serving on every board they could, serving their community through the American Legion, Kiwanis, and participating in every patriotic event they could. For my parents, each good-bye for Kevin's deployments were so very difficult; knowing the pain of longing for a return doesn't always end as hoped.
As a military spouse of 26 years I have also walked alongside those who have been left behind. Kevin and I have lost friends and fellow Marines and soldiers. The toll is heavy.
Over the years, I have seen the intense toll this kind of sacrifice can take on a family and I have seen how it can bind them together. The effects are far reaching and ever present to those who remain behind.
So today, please take a moment to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In the coming days/months please reach out to a family that is left behind and remember to pray for them as they walk this journey. We are a stronger more powerful nation because of their sacrifice. You and I reap the benefits of the sacrifice those families have made - let's honor them today and in the days to come.
"Greater love has no one than this; that one lay down his life for his friends" John 15:13 (ESV)
